Mark Alan Lovewell - Photographer
Mark Alan Lovewell, 61, has been a professional photographer and writer on Martha's Vineyard for 34 years. He has worked for a number of different publications and organizations. He has been a photographer for the Vineyard Gazette since 1978 and a full-time writer for almost as long.
His work appears often in Martha's Vineyard Magazine and Best Read Guide.
•His work has appeared in International photography magazines, including Hasselblad Forum in 1990 and the Italian magazine La Fotografia i March of 1991.
•His 1997 photograph of Comet Hale Bopp over East Chop was published as a poster and distributed worldwide by New York Graphic Society.
•He was featured in Vineyard Style Magazine, in the spring of 2002. The article included a photography spread and was written by the magazine’s editor John Budris.
He photographs using a digital Nikon D1-X with an assortment of interchangeable lenses; a Hasselblad medium format camera and a (4 x 5) large format camera.
As a young photographer he was greatly influenced by the large format black and white photography of Ansel Adams, Paul Strand and Edward Weston. Later he got to be friends with Alfred Eisenstaedt, of Life Magazine.
Seven years ago The New England Outdoor Writers Association gave a number of first place awards to this photographer. In the spring issue of their 1997 newsletter the following was written: "Vineyard Gazette reporter, photographer and fishing columnist, Mark Lovewell showed us just how beautiful black and white can be. Mark Won First Place in Scenic, Action and Fauna categories, a second in Scenic and third in Fauna in the Black and White Division!"
•Education: He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Empire State College, State University of New York in 1978.
